If the one drawback is the interface layout, you still have a very useful app here, well worth the time to navigate its menus. It's a free app loaded with more options than a lot of paid apps and it runs smoothly and exports surprisingly good looking photos. There are quite a few useful tools in piZap if you're willing to spend time with it. Everything you've seen in a free photo editor before is here in some form but the layout and menus make navigation harder than it needs to be. In addition to Facebook and Instagram compatibility, you can auto-crop images and add stickers, meme-style text, borders, other photos, cut-outs, and much more. From there, you can start adding various effects, and with piZap there are quite a few. Show your support on International Womens Day by creating a card or poster and share them with us. All of these options connect to each other at some point, but it will not always be easy to find those connections so it's best to start with the function you most want to use. 'Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow' is this years United Nations theme for InternationalWomensDay. When you open piZap, the home screen will provide you with four options - create a collage, edit a photo, add a background, or take a photo. Billed as a photo editing suite, piZap contains a range of tools that will make it easier for you to edit and share your images on your phone but because everything is jammed together into a clunky interface, it will often take time to find and use the tools you are looking for. Those of you who wish for a more academic approach can scroll to the bottom to check out our initial research. Have some fun clicking around on our all-singing-and-dancing infographic below. Also, based in London, we don’t live close enough to Cape Canaveral to run around waving our own decibel meter…. Further investigation revealed that people forget to mention how far away they were when actually measuring the sounds. Indeed, most of our research showed that an aeroplane taking off is louder than a spaceship launch and surely this cannot be the case. We found so many different accounts of how loud the same sound was. However, we didn’t know where the ‘cut-off’ point should have been and we got somewhat carried away until we found the worlds loudest noise!ĭespite all of our in-depth research, noise levels and decibels are still controversial and subjective. We initially wanted to create an amazingly informative infographic to best explain how loud our air conditioners are. So we started to delve into the dark world of decibels to make the blinking things easier to understand. The findings from this exploratory study suggested that the Cold Air Drain®#1550 with each power unit may be significantly quieter than traditional wind machines (e.g., 90dB at 126ft1).Our initial attempt to explain how loud air conditioners are via an internet page was, in our opinion, a minor disaster.Īn indisputable fact is that 99.999% of us haven’t got a clue what a decibel either sounds like or looks like! Let’s be honest, we didn’t even know ourselves precisely what a decibel was! At a distance of 100ft the decibel levels for both the engine side and opposite the engine approximated the level of normal conversation (see Table 2). The decibel levels at 5ft from each power unit on the side opposite of the engine are comparable to the levels of a telephone dial tone (see Table 2). The decibel levels at 5ft from each power unit on the engine side are comparable to the level of city traffic from inside a car (see Table 2). The decibel level for each power unit tested was highest at 5ft from the engine for both the engine side and the side opposite the engine. As the distance from the Cold Air Drain® unit increased, the decibel level decreased. Actual decibel levels will likely be significantly lowered depending on soil type, ground cover, topography, obstructions (e.g., buildings, plants), temperature, and weather conditions.įindings: Table 1 shows the decibel levels by distance from the Cold Air Drain® #1550 operating with each power unit. Decibel readings were taken from 5ft to 150ft in 10ft increments. Decibel readings were taken using a Checkmate CM-130 on both the engine side and on the side directly opposite from the engine at a height of 5ft The ambient decibel level was measured at 5ft from the unit. The temperature was 58☏ at start of testing and had risen to 70☏ by the completion of the test, with 59% humidity (throughout the testing period). Each Cold Air Drain® model was tested in the same location at the facility on a level asphalt surface, with an aluminum building to the north of the testing area and a rail yard to the south of the testing area. Testing was conducted on Jbetween 7:00AM and 10:30AM. Methods: An exploratory study measuring the decibel levels for the Cold Air Drain® #1550 model with several available power options was conducted at the Shur Farms Frost Protection® manufacturing facility in Colton, California. For example, 70dB is 10 times as loud as 60dB. All readings used the A-weighted decibels (dBA). An increase of 10dB means the sound is 10 times as loud. An increase of 3dB is a doubling of the "strength" of the sound. You cannot add and subtract dB like ordinary numbers. General Decibel Information: The decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit. Once it has scanned your documents, all the documents and images are uploaded directly to Google Drive, Dropbox, Evernote or OneDrive. What is great about this duplex document scanner is that it scans directly to the cloud without a computer being needed. The scanner has a scan speed of 30 PPM, a 600 DPI optical resolution and most importantly a touch screen to operate it. The app can convert images to text just fine and you can output your paper documents to multiple file formats like Word Doc in which you can edit text using Microsoft’s word processing apps or Excel XLS spreadsheets. Even though it is not the full version of the OCR programming solution from ABBYY and it is a more simple software, it still works great. The Fujitsu ScanSnap IX1500 has the ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap OCR optical character recognition software in the software bundle. And if those two are not enough, you can also buy an optional ethernet connection. The scanner can handle any document up to A4 size and it has great connectivity: A SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port and a Wireless connection. Epson recommends you scan up to 4000 sheets per day with this device which should cover most of your office needs. This image scanner is also quite fast, it can scan 35 pages per minute and it will hold up to 50 documents in its ADF tray. If we want to create PDF documents that are used for document archiving we use the ABBYY server OCR though. The Acrobat app converts scanned documents to PDF only and its main advantage is the intelligent PDF compressor feature. We use this software especially for data capture but also to digitize books together with Adobe Acrobat and other OCR engines. After you run them through the scanner’s OCR software, you can convert them to searchable PDFs, editable Word documents, Microsoft Excel XLS, RTF, TXT and HTML file format. The software can output the scanned images in Bitmap, JPEG, TIFF and PNG. Classifieds for example tend to have smaller characters and the 600 dpi resolution will definitely make the difference there but in general, not as much. Obviously here, we are talking about characters that were printed with a standard font size. We tested this to find out if you really need more than 600 dpi and we found out there is a breaking point somewhere around the 400 dpi image resolution after which there is no more gain in character confidence and text recognition accuracy from high-quality images. For OCR, 600 dpi is more than enough for maximum character recognition accuracy. This document scanner uses a CCD sensor (Charge-Coupled Device) to create digital images at an optical resolution of 600 dpi. The software package that it comes with, includes the ABBYY FineReader Sprint. The Epson Ds-575 is one of our favorite OCR scanners. SuperSpeed USB 3.0, Wireless and Ethernet (optional) All backups got a quick sanity check after that experience.Īs to backup frequency, this depends entirely on the rate of change of your audio files, and how easy that is to replace if you lost everything since the last backup. The disk could be written to OK (as far as Windows was concerned), but could not be read from. When some contents were finally listed, trying to read them produced many error messages in File Explorer. I could see that Windows was having trouble accessing the disk contents, so this didn’t look good. The backup went fine and I went to check the contents of the disk. Many years ago I purchased a 2TB disk for backup purposes. You can then do a quick confidence check of the disc contents themselves to check the size of the backup is about right and you can playback a sample track. Swapping disks by hand almost forces you to take notice of what the backup program has just done, via the onscreen summary (with Allwaysync anyway). So when disaster strikes and you go to retrieve the data, you may find it stopped working 6 months ago and nobody noticed! You may want to set it up under a Managed Service Account. The problem with relying on a fully automated backup is that you will tend to trust it completely. Note that it may be difficult to get this to work if SQL Server is running under a local service account.

If you choose this option Blender will try to automatically place new seams (it won't actually mark them on the mesh) and unwrap the mesh. Smart UV Project is an automatic method of unwrapping a mesh. You can then use the F6 operator menu (also found at the bottom of the left T toolbar) to adjust some settings relating to the exact shape of the pelt. This gives you exact control over the pelt's graph. When you choose the Unwrap option in the UV Mapping ( U) menu, Blender will attempt to unwrap the mesh splitting it using only seams you have already marked (with Ctrl+ E > Mark Seam). In short: the Unwrap option is manual, while Smart UV Project attempts to automatically unwrap your mesh for you. This is an appreciable difference from Blender, which is entirely free. Both options unwrap your mesh (creating 2-dimensional UV mapping coordinates for it). Maya, however, can be a little expensive to switch to if you’re just getting started or are a solo artist. There's a lot of support for Maya in the form of tutorials thanks to its parent company Autodesk, which has even created another modeling software called 3DS Max, though knowing which 3D modeling software of the two is the right one for you can be a little tricky. The animation tools available with Maya often outpace what Blender can do, with faster playback and more intuitive editors being available. The UI is simple, clean, and many find it easier to use than Blender’s interface. Maya is seen as an industry-standard in many places, and though Blender is incredibly popular, there are still many situations where Maya will be the better option.Īs for the software itself, Maya is an incredibly powerful rendering, animating, modeling, and sculpting tool. Where Blender can often be esoteric or difficult to search through in big parts, Bforartists focuses its manual on the tools themselves and a structure that is more easily understandable. Moreover, Bforartists has ample documentation in the form of its manual. The approach here is less on hotkeys and more on menu navigation and mouse control, which is ideal if you’re just getting started or find it more intuitive to be working largely through your mouse instead of your keyboard. The available tools are identical, but Bforartists focuses on a more streamlined and simpler-to-understand interface. The main differences between the two are in their approach to UI. Any project you’re working on can be moved to Bforartists and back to Blender at any time, so there’s little reason not to give the swap a try and see how you like it. If you’re looking for the most directly comparable tool on this list, then Bforartists would be just that, since it’s actually a fork of Blender.īforartists updates as Blender does, meaning that you can freely swap between the two. Blender has a similar tool, but you might just find that you get better results with the Wings 3D AutoUV tool. You can use this tool to cut and unfold an image of a model’s surface so that you can better paint and texture it. The best thing Wings 3D has going for it, however, is its AutoUV facility. If you're just trying to learn how to get started with 3D modeling, then Wings 3D is a good choice, too. The interface is simple to grasp and full of easy-access context menus you can reach with just a right-click. If you’re looking for a powerful 3D modeler that many find easier to use than Blender, then Wings 3D is an excellent choice. If you started using Blender because you wanted to make use of its animation, rigging, or motion pathing tools, then Wings 3D likely isn’t a good alternative for you. Unlike Blender, however, it has no animation or other functions. Wings 3D, much like Blender, is a free and open-source 3D modeling tool that you can use to create and animate models for just about any purpose you can imagine. Because it is heat and UV resistant, it is great choice as an outdoor paving material or a replacement for concrete look tiles. It is also used for splashbacks, table surfaces, shower stalls, feature walls, staircases and as wall cladding. Today terrazzo slabs (of a minimum 30mm thick) can be used to make a Terrazzo benchtop in a kitchen or a Terrazzo tiles bathroom. New technologies and techniques have expanded its possible uses. Terrazzo was originally considered a flooring material, but things have changed. Because it is an aggregate material, colour choice is only limited by the colours of the chips and cements available. One of Terrazzo’s major selling points is the vast array of colours possible. Terrazzo concrete is poured, in situ, like regular concrete and consumers can also choose between terrazzo tiles, monolithic terrazzo, sand cushioned terrazzo, and thinset terrazzo. There are several types of the material available. If that were to happen, the value of having a surface with a 75-year lifespan becomes redundant. While there’s no way of knowing one way or the other, it could well be consigned again to that status. It’s worth remembering that not too long ago the material was considered kitsch. Also, it is quite slippery and requires a non-slip coating.Īpart from that, while Terrazzo is enjoying popularity right now, that may not always be the case. Unfortunately, there are some poor-quality products on the market, which are brittle and can lose their colour easily. In the case of terrazzo floor tiles, cleaning is a simple matter of sweeping or mopping.Īll these advantages apply to high quality, well-produced Terrazzo. It is resistant to heat and therefore it is suitable for kitchen countertops and backsplashes that are near to ovens, kettles, and so forth.Īpart from being easy to clean, Terrazzo is resistant to mould, water, stains, and other microbes. On top of that, it is available in an almost limitless number of colours and design options. Because it is made from recycled aggregates and its production doesn’t involve any volatile organic compounds (VOC), it is an environmentally friendly material. It is suitable for high traffic areas and has a lifespan of 75-100 years. Manufactured using high compressive strength, Terrazzo is durable and long lasting. Compared to, say, ceramic tiles it delivers a real earthiness and sense of warmth. Terrazzo’s major attraction is its aesthetic appeal. It is popular in bathrooms, kitchens, as an outdoor material and has even found its way to the of graphic design world! These days, Terrazzo is used on much more than Terrazzo flooring, not just in the major cities like Sydney and Melbourne, but around Australia. It achieved popularity in that country with Art Deco and Moderne styles from the 1920s to the 1940s and is currently experiencing a new wave of popularity. Later in the 18 th Century, the material was used in Italy, then made its way to the U.S. It originated in ancient Egypt, where it was used to create mosaics. Available in an almost limitless array of colours, it comes in various types including terrazzo tiles, monolithic terrazzo, sand cushioned terrazzo, and thinset terrazzo. Terrazzo is a composite stone, made from a mixture containing chips of recycled glass as well materials like marble, granite and quartz, all held together by a cementitious binder.
